About the Terry Fox Run

Terry Fox was 18 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer in his leg. After having his leg amputated below the knee, he convinced the Canadian Cancer Society to sponsor his "Marathon of Hope", in which he would run across Canada raising awareness and funds for cancer research. He made it over halfway across Canada , averaging 26 miles (42 km) a day, when he felt a sharp pain in his chest and was forced to stop. The cancer had spread to his lungs, and he lost his battle with cancer, just as Kate did, 1 month before his 23rd birthday (For more info on Terry Fox, please visit the official Terry Fox Foundation site.).

In many ways, Terry's story mirrors Kate's. She had the same spirit, determination, and compassion within her. She never let the cancer get the best of her spirit, and for this reason, we try to get as many people to participate in the Terry Fox Run and collect as much money for the cause as we can. Every single cent we raise - over $150,000 to date - goes to cancer research conducted by Dr. Renier Brentjens at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. For information on Dr. Brentjen's research, please visit page 3 of the 2008 Kate's Team® Newsletter.

As members of Kate's Team, we do the physical part of the run every year in Kate's memory. I have no doubt that she is right there with us, running alongside, as the free spirit she has always been.

"She was limited only by a body that could not contain all the wonder that she is. Everyone who knew her are the ones who are sad, but wherever she is, she is smiling…and she’s limited no more."
